According to the information given by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, artist Jyldyzbek Moldakhmatov painted the important historical and touristic places of Northern Cyprus, “Kantara Castle”, “Buffavento Castle” and “Results of the year 1916” for the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts and presented to the taste of art lovers.
Kantara Castle is the eastern castle of the three mountain castles built on the Kyrenia Mountains. Although the construction date of the castle is not known for certain, it is believed that it was first built in the 11th century against the Islamic raids such as St. Hilarion and Buffavento Castles. It is thought to have been built as a watchtower by the Byzantines in the 16th century. The castle was used for asylum and defense purposes during the Lusignan period, and it was evacuated and abandoned during the Venetian period.
Buffavento Castle was built in Kyrenia Mountains as a watchtower for the defense and watching the coasts of the island against the Islamic State raids coming from the north of the island during the Byzantine period. The castle, located on the top of Çatalköy, east of Kyrenia, was named Buffavento, which means the one standing against the winds. It was built at the top of the steepest and windswept area of Cyprus at an altitude of 950 meters above sea level.
