Mehmet Yılmaz

Artist, academician: painter, sculptor, videoman; writer, translator, editor; father, husbant – not curator yet. According his father Mehmet Yılmaz was born in 06.06.1962; yet his official ID card indicates the date of 14.06.1963.

The artist graduated from the Department of Painting in Gazi University (1987); received the degrees of Master of Fine Art (1989) and Sufficiency in Art (equal to PhD, 1993) both from Hacettepe University. Between 1990-2003, he gave the courses of Painting, Sculpture and Contemporary Art in the department of Music and Fine Art in ODTÜ (Middle East Technical University). Then, he was honoured with the title of Proffesor in Mersin University in 2004; started to work in the Fine Art Faculty, Gazi University, 2006.When Gazi University was divided into two in 2018, this faculty was transferred to Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University.

Yılmaz opened his first solo exhibition of paintings and sculptures (1982) before he started to study arts. Since then he has held numerous personal exhibitions; was invited national and international group events; has been awarded 15 times in Turkey. Yılmaz worked on political series as Images from New World Order, Fragments in my Memory, Window and My Confined Side from 1980’s to the early 2000’s. Then, the artist focused an autobiographical work on the mutual connotations of forms and concepts such as External as Stranger to its Internal and Jinsexual Things; produced paintings and videos in the concept of Indecent for Unfavorable, 2006-2011. He worked on the series of Twins reckoned the whatness of painting through certain images made by hand and machine, 2011-2013; then, started to work on Friends series related to the problems of identity and the whatness of art. Friends later became the parts of the series of Heymimres.

The artist is still working as a professor at Fine Arts Faculty in AHBVÜ and as part time instructor for art courses at Music and Fine Art Department in ODTÜ.
